A light day today – flat along the coast to the UNESCO Heritage City of Hoi An.
It was mighty warm and sunny, but while we were moving, we were cool enough, only stopping meant having to deal with the heat (almost 30°C) – how quickly things have changed.
We passed numerous huge beachside resorts and the “Marble Mountains” just south of Danang where lots of Marble carving shops showing off magnificent (and somewhat huge) statues/sculptures – I think Jörg was thinking about how he could fit one on his bike…
We had a light lunch on the beach – we were saddened by the massive efforts they are making regarding beach/sand erosion – it took away quite a bit of magic from the otherwise beautiful clean beach….
Then a short cycle into town and to our hotel – a “resort & spa” with an outdoor pool (that we right away made use of – finally the weather is good enough to actually make use of a pool….
We headed into town for dinner and had a quick taste of what Hoi An is like (well, at least the “old part of town”) – a wonderful magical place filled with boutiques and lanterns.
We ate one of the towns specialties – Banh My – a sandwich based on a mini-baguette (remnants of french colonial times) with lettuce and various local fresh herbs, some pork (or other meats as desired) some sauce, and other unknown ingredients – absolutely wonderful – simple but wonderful… so good we had two.
All pictures from Hoi An will be in the next post.
